Robert Neale
Portland Trust’s founder Robert Neale earns 2026 CEEQA award for Lifetime Achievement in Real Estate
Robert Neale is one of the true pioneers of the CEE real estate market, perhaps less well known than many of the recipients of CEEQA’s Lifetime Achievement award, except in the Czech and Romania markets in which he made his name and pushed boundaries.
The award is given each year to an inspirational industry figure whose market leadership has helped shape the emergence of the sector post-communism and into the future.
Early days
Arriving in Prague in 1991 to help establish an office for a Scottish firm of chartered surveyors, Ryden (now Knight Frank), Robert went on to establish the first Healey & Baker office (now Cushman & Wakefield) which he led until establishing Portland Trust in 1998.
At Portland Trust he signed a joint venture with Roger Orf of Pelham Partners and Apollo Real Estate in 1999, a relationship which spearheaded the company’s venture into development with the completion of the first class-A office building in Bucharest, the 20,000 sqm Opera Center. The JV with Apollo subsequently merged into a partnership with Ares Management Corporation and numerous projects followed in Prague, including Metropole Zlicin (60,000m2 shopping center), Oregon House (14,000m2 offices), Karlovarska Business Park (60,000m2 light industrial), and Bucharest Business Park (25,000m2 offices), Oregon Park (70,000m2 offices), Floreasca(75,000m2), Expo Business Park (40,000m2) and J8 Office Center (44,000m2) in Bucharest.
Eye on the future
By 2020 Portland Trust had developed and leased over 425,000 sqm net office space and over 200,000 sqm of industrial space.. The company won numerous awards for design, leasing and early adoption of energy efficiency and sustainability in office buildings. Portland’s ground-breaking office project in Bucharest, Floreasca Park, won the CEEQA Real Green award and the Green Leadership award in 2015.
During 2024 Portland sold ready to build PV parks with over 450MW of permitted power which was a well-timed foray into the renewables market. Portland even developed an international school and a beer experience! Current projects include industrial parks and 5 data center sites.
Robert continues to trust the future of the CEE real estate market, in particular the Czech and Romania markets in which he operates.
We look forward to welcoming Robert to the pantheon of sector giants and legends with this year’s award for Lifetime Achievement in Real Estate. The award will be presented at this years CEEQA Gala on 20 May in Warsaw.
Congratulations Rob.
